Privacy policy
Effective 7 October 2026 · RateMySpanish (ratemyspanish.com) and its iOS app, operated by Sixaloa Industries.
The short version
You can play without an account. If you make one, we keep your email address and your results so your streak, your page and your corrections follow you. We don't sell your data. The iOS app doesn't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
What we collect
- Your translations and results — what you write for each challenge, the score, the marks and the tutor's notes, any vocabulary hints you ask for, and your answers to the weekly review.
- Account details (only if you make an account) — your email address, an optional first name, the public name friends see on your challenges, your level, variety and language settings, and whether you want the daily email. If you sign in with Apple we receive the email address Apple gives us (which may be a private relay address) and a stable identifier for your Apple ID.
- Playing without an account — a random identifier kept in a cookie (on the site) or on your device (in the app), so your result and streak stay yours until you sign up.
- Friends you challenge by email — the address you type, used to send that one invitation. Anyone can decline and is never emailed again.
- Purchases — which plan you have and its renewal status. Card details go to Stripe (on the site) or Apple (in the app); we never see them.
- Notifications (app) — if you allow them, your device's push token, time zone and language, so the daily challenge arrives in the morning where you are.
- Technical data — the IP address and browser or app version of requests, kept in server logs, and recorded once when you sign up.
- How you found us (site only) — if you arrive from an ad or a shared link, the campaign tags in that link (such as utm parameters or an ad platform's click identifier), kept with your account if you sign up.
Why
- To grade your translations, show your results, keep your streak and page, and send the emails and notifications you asked for.
- To run the pass: who has it, and what it opens.
- To keep the service safe — limiting abuse and spam.
- To learn whether our ads work (site visitors who came from an ad only — see below).
Who else sees it
- Anthropic — your translation, the challenge sentence and any hints are sent to Anthropic's Claude model to grade it and to write hints and the weekly review. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models under our commercial terms.
- Stripe and Apple — payments for the pass.
- Postmark — sends our emails.
- DigitalOcean — hosts the servers and the database.
- Apple Push Notification service — delivers app notifications.
- Google Fonts — the site's typefaces are loaded from Google's servers, which see your IP address.
- Meta and OpenAI (advertising) — on the website, when you arrive from one of our ads, we tell that ad platform when you play, sign up or buy, so it can measure the ad. We send a hashed (one-way scrambled) email address, your IP address and browser, and the ad's click identifier. The website also loads Meta's pixel. The iOS app sends nothing to ad platforms.
- Friends you challenge see your score and your public name (or the name you give), never your translation before they have played.
We don't sell personal data, and we don't share it for anyone else's advertising.
How long we keep it
As long as you have an account. Results played without an account stay attached to that anonymous identifier. Server logs are kept for a short period for operations and security.
Your choices
- Delete your account — in the app under Account › Delete account, or by writing to us. Your results, stamps, streak and settings are deleted; a web subscription is cancelled. An App Store subscription is managed by Apple in your iPhone's settings.
- Emails — every email has an unsubscribe link; the daily email can be switched off on your account page.
- Notifications — switch them off in the app or in your iPhone's settings.
- Access or correction — write to us and we'll send you what we hold or fix it.
Children
The service is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
